Phase/Transitions is a 3-CD set of 39 electro/acoustic improvisations by Triple Point. There have been no overdubs or post-processing. Triple Point is an improvising trio whose core instrumentation is soprano saxophone, greis/electronics and V-accordion. The name refers to the point of equilibrium on a phase plot, which acts as metaphor for our improvisational dialogue. Their musical interaction is centered around an interplay between acoustics, physically-modeled acoustics (v-accordion) and electronics. Van Nort captures the sound of the other performers on-the-fly, either transforming these in the moment to create blended textures or new sonic gestures, or holding them for return in the near future. Oliveros changes between timbres and "bends" the intended factory sound models through her idiosyncratic use of the virtual instrument, while Braasch explores extended techniques including long circular-breathing tones and multiphonics. This mode of interaction has resulted in situations where acoustic/electronic sources are indistinguishable without very careful listening, while others times this becomes wildly apparent. This continual, fluid morphing is a product of Deep Listening and living in the moment. Pauline Oliveros has influenced American music extensively in her career spanning more than 60 years as a composer, performer, author and philosopher. She pioneered the concept of Deep Listening, her practice based upon principles of improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation, designed to inspire both trained and untrained musicians to practice the art of listening and responding to environmental conditions in solo and ensemble situations. Doug Van Nort is an experimental musician and sound artist whose work is dedicated to personal and collective creative expression through noise, free improvisation and various electro-acoustic means of production, from the lo-fi of broken electronics to the hi-tech of custom signal processing algorithms. Recent projects have spanned telematic music compositions, transforming an elevator into an electroacoustic sculpture, interactive textiles, creating machine listening+improvising systems, interactive music composition for dance based on muscle sound, and performing sonified data streams from NASA's Kepler mission. Jonas Braasch is an experimental soprano saxophonist and acoustician with interests in telematic music and intelligent music systems. He has performed with Curtis Bahn, Chris Chafe, Michael Century, Mark Dresser, Pauline Oliveros, Doug Van Nort, and Stuart Dempster, among others. His saxophone style expands the traditional repertoire by incorporating various non-western elements and extended techniques. (label info)
